The practical question is what sits next to it in your dock. Many CleanShot users also pay for a video recorder. OwnClip’s pitch is that one $39 purchase covers both jobs.
CleanShot earned its reputation on speed and polish: capture, annotate, pin, share, in a beautifully tuned flow. OwnClip covers the same core: capture modes for screen, window, and region; a full annotation editor with arrows, shapes, step numbers, and blur; scrolling capture; OCR with on-device AI clean-up; plus things CleanShot does not attempt, like Vision-powered subject detect-and-erase and on-device image generation.
Where the two differ philosophically is the cloud. CleanShot Cloud stores your captures on their servers. OwnClip’s share links serve files from your own Google Drive, so a screenshot of your internal dashboard never lives on someone else’s infrastructure.
CleanShot records the screen, and for a quick MP4 or GIF that is often enough. But it is not a video product: no webcam effects, no timeline editor, no captions, no audio cleanup.
