ScreenFlow starts at $199 and is sold on an annual basis at the time of writing. OwnClip Pro is $39, once, with every v1 update included. If you produce screencasts every year, the gap compounds; if you only record occasionally, OwnClip’s free tier (full feature set, capped output) may cover you entirely without spending anything.
The two products also draw the line differently on what costs extra. OwnClip ships transcription, noise removal, and camera effects on-device at no added cost. ScreenFlow treats transcription as a paid add-on service.
ScreenFlow’s editor is a genuine multi-layer NLE that people have built course-production businesses on: nested clips, callouts, motions, per-layer audio. If your workflow depends on that depth of manual control, it remains excellent.
OwnClip’s editor is built for a different rhythm: record, let the machine do the tedious parts, ship. Auto zoom follows your cursor and clicks so you never keyframe a punch-in by hand. Silence detection cuts the dead air. On-device transcription produces captions without uploading audio anywhere. DeepFilterNet noise removal cleans the room out of your voice track. You still get a real timeline (trim, cut, speed, chapters, redaction), but the default path from raw take to polished video is minutes, not an evening.
OwnClip is Apple Silicon-only on purpose: capture through ScreenCaptureKit, hardware encoding through VideoToolbox, camera effects as Metal compute shaders, AI on the Neural Engine. That focus buys smooth long recordings, small files, and effects that keep up at high frame rates.
