OwnClip vs the Mac Screenshot app
Shift-Command-5 is already on your Mac, and on macOS 27 Visual Intelligence can tell you what is in a screenshot. Here is what OwnClip adds, and when you do not need it.
The short version
For a quick screenshot you paste and forget, the built-in tool is excellent, free and unmarked. OwnClip is for what comes after the capture: scrolling pages, recordings with system audio, a real editor, a bug report or a guide made from what you captured, and every capture findable later by the text that was on screen.

What macOS already does well
Shift-Command-3, 4 and 5 are fast, free and on every Mac. You can capture the whole screen, a window, a region or a menu, set a timer, remember the last selection, show the pointer, and click the floating thumbnail to mark it up. Hold Control and the capture goes to the clipboard instead of a file. For a screenshot you paste into a chat and never think about again, that is all you need.
macOS 27 adds Visual Intelligence on the Mac. Take a screenshot and you can ask about it, search for it, translate the text, or have the details of an event flyer added to Calendar. It is a real step forward, and it is free.
Where it stops: after the capture
The built-in tool answers “what is on my screen?”. It saves a file, and the file sits in a folder named by the date. OwnClip is built around the next question: what can I make from this?
Every capture gets a title, a description and tags on the Mac, and lands in Capture Memory, so next month you can find it by a word that was on screen, the app it came from or the page you were on (Free searches the last 30 days, Pro everything). The card after a capture suggests a next step: copy a table so it pastes as cells, copy code with its indentation, translate into an editable copy, or start a bug report with the app, the page and the error text already filled in. On Pro, two screenshots become a numbered list of what changed, and a series becomes a how-to guide.
Recording is a different job
Shift-Command-5 also records the screen, with a microphone. It does not record what the Mac is playing, cannot pause, and leaves you with a trim handle. That is fine for a silent clip.
OwnClip records system audio and your microphone as separate tracks, adds a webcam bubble with on-device effects, pauses and resumes, and opens the take in an editor that zooms on your clicks, cuts silence and captions it on the Mac. Instant Replay keeps the last 30 seconds in memory when you switch it on, so a moment you were not recording can still be saved.
Using Apple’s model, not racing it
When Apple Intelligence is on, OwnClip uses Apple’s on-device model to look at each screenshot, the same private, local model macOS uses. Without Apple Intelligence every OwnClip feature still works from the text on screen. Either way, nothing is uploaded.
When the Mac Screenshot app is the better choice
- You take quick screenshots, paste them and move on. Nothing about that needs another app.
- You want unmarked screenshots and will not pay. OwnClip’s Free tier adds a small “Made with OwnClip” to screenshot exports and copies.
- You want to ask about what is on screen, search the web for it or act on it. Visual Intelligence on macOS 27 does that for any screenshot.
- Your Mac is Intel-based or is not on the latest macOS. OwnClip needs both Apple silicon and the latest macOS.
- You are on a managed Mac where you cannot install software.
