Comparison

OwnClip vs Apple Preview

Preview marks up images, fills PDF forms and signs them, for free, on every Mac. Here is where OwnClip goes further, and where Preview is the better tool.

The short version

For signing a form, merging PDFs or a quick arrow on an image, Preview is free, unmarked and already there. OwnClip is for images that have to look finished or explain something: step numbers and blur, backgrounds and shadows, erasing objects, colour work in layers, and turning a screenshot into a bug report or a guide.

Preview is better than people think

Preview fills the fields in a PDF form, with AutoFill for your name and address, and adds text boxes to forms that have no fields. It saves a signature drawn on the trackpad, held up to the camera or written on your iPhone. It merges PDFs, reorders and extracts pages, password-protects a file and shrinks it. On images it marks up, crops, adjusts colour, resizes in batches, removes a background to a transparent PNG, and lets you select and copy text with Live Text. Its Redact tool removes the content rather than covering it.

All of that is free, unmarked, and on every Mac. Since iOS 26 it is on iPhone and iPad too.

Where OwnClip goes further with images

Preview’s Markup is built for notes on a document. OwnClip’s editor is built for screenshots that have to explain something: 22 tools including auto-numbered step badges, blur, a highlighter and stickers, with each mark kept editable. Beautify puts the result on one of 220 backgrounds with an adaptive shadow, padding and an aspect preset, so it is ready for a post or a doc.

It also does the work you would otherwise open a photo app for. Magic Erase removes an object and fills in what was behind it. Adjustment layers give you curves, levels, HSL, colour grading and LUTs, each with its own mask, and a camera RAW develop module handles photos straight off a camera. Every capture, image and PDF opens in its own tab, keeping its layers and undo history.

PDF forms: closer than you would expect

Both apps fill a PDF’s real form fields rather than stamping text on top, so the result is still a working form. OwnClip adds line detection for flat, scanned forms with no fields, and one-click autofill from details you saved on the Mac.

Two honest differences favour Preview. OwnClip’s Free tier flattens PDF exports and adds a watermark; Pro exports clean and can keep the form editable. And Preview manages pages (merge, reorder, extract), which OwnClip does not try to do. If PDFs are most of your work, Preview may be all you need.

From a picture to something useful

Preview opens a file. OwnClip asks what the file is for. A screenshot can become a bug report with the app, the page and the error text filled in (free), or a Before & After video, GIF or embed from two images (free). On Pro, two screenshots become a numbered list of what changed, typed instructions like “circle the error, arrow to Save” become editable annotations, and a series of captures becomes a written guide.

When Preview is the better choice

  • You fill and sign the occasional form and want the result unmarked and still fillable, without paying.
  • You need to merge, reorder, split or delete PDF pages.
  • You want unlimited free text copying from images. OwnClip’s Free tier includes five text reads a month.
  • You want to cut a subject out as a transparent PNG for free. On OwnClip, tracing a shape to a transparent PNG is Pro.
  • You also work on an iPhone or iPad, or on a Mac that is Intel-based or not on the latest macOS.
