I want to…

Quick Start: your first recording

About a minute once OwnClip is installed
  1. 1

    Open OwnClip

It lives in your menu bar. The first-time setup asks for Screen Recording, so click Allow when macOS asks. If you turn on your microphone or webcam, macOS asks for those the first time too, and you can click Allow or skip them. After you switch Screen Recording on, macOS may ask OwnClip to quit and reopen. Click Restart OwnClip (or Quit & Reopen, if macOS shows that button). Nothing you have done so far is lost.

  2. 2

    Press ⌃⌥⌘R

This shortcut works from any app and needs no extra permission. A 3-second countdown gives you time to switch to the window you want. Recording starts on its own. Esc cancels during the countdown.

  3. 3

    Press ⌃⌥⌘R again

The video is saved on your Mac, ready to edit or share. The original file is never overwritten.

  4. Nothing you record leaves your Mac unless you choose Share, Smart Share or cloud backup. Next: choose what to capture, edit the result, then share it. If the recording is blank, see Permissions.
